Pollack resigns as Commissioner of WSOP

November 16, 2009

Just a few days after Joe Cada was crowned the new world champion, the Commissioner of the WSOP Jeffery Pollack has confirmed that he is to resign from his post. Although the move was initially motted in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Pollack has now confirmed his move in an interview where he confims that he plans to “explore new business challenges.”

His loss was surely be felt to the WSOP as an organisation, as they have grown immensly under Pollack’s leadership. Not only has he ensure that the game has reached a larger audience than ever before, but he has cemented the organisation’s future by recently signing a seven year TV deal with ESPN and has also brought in sponsorship from other household names such as Planters, Milwaukee’s Best Light and Corum.

Pollack’s legacy will be a strong one though having started the Players Advisory Council in 2006, creating the November Nine last year and re-defining teh Poker Hall of Fame. He can also lay claim to launching the $50k H.O.R.S.E Championship and taking the WSOP overseas with the creation of the WSOP Europe brand.

There are no official plans to replace him yet, but the focus will surely now switch to Mitch Garber. The former CEO of PartyGaming is now leading the new Harrah’s Interactive Entermainment brand but seems the natural choice to step into Pollack’s well worn shoes.

A spokesman for WSOP confirmed Pollacks achievements in a well worded press conference.

“We appreciate Jeffrey’s contributions over the past four years and wish him the best in the future. The World Series of Poker remains the market leader with this year’s tournament exceeding all expectations, and we are well positioned for the future.”
