McDonald comes of age at the German EPT

February 4, 2008

Casino HohensyburgEighteen year old Mike McDonald has a lot to thank his former chess teacher for.

After picking up the $1.3million first prize at the German European Poker Tour event, the young Canadian revealed that it had been while studying at the well known University of Waterloo that his chess mentor introduced him to the game and told him that it was a good way to make a living.

McDonald obviously took these words to heart and dived head long into his first tournament on his eighteenth birthday which just so happened to coincide with the World Series of Poker Europe in London. He turned up with his $10,000 buy-in and ended up at the feature table alongside Jamie Gold before the 2006 World Champion eliminated him from the tournament.

He obviously learned a lot from his experience though as he has been going from strength to strength. Having got into the prize money for the first time in Prague at the end of last year, McDonald has picked up prize money five times in the last month alone.

The German EPT victory represents his biggest success yet though and suggests that he is one to keep an eye on in the future.

Online poker players can qualify for all European Poker Tour events at PokerStars.
