Chip Reese passes on in his sleep
December 6, 2007
The poker world was in mourning last night at the loss of arguably the world’s greatest cash player.
David “Chip” Reese, 56, had been taken into hospital with pneumonia symptoms but had later been allowed to return home. He died in his sleep later that evening. It’s still unclear whether the exact cause of death was related to his earlier symptoms.
Reese first arrived in Vegas in 1974 for a holiday on his way to graduate business school and ended up turning the $400 in his pocket into $50,000. Over 30 years later, he had made himself into a living legend there winning WSOP bracelets in 1982 and 1978 for $5,000 limit stud and $1,000 stud split and the inaugral $50,000 WSOP H.O.R.S.E. event in 2006 following a heads up match with Andy Bloch lasting over six hours.
He was considered a master of stud winning over $2million during the mid-70s. So much so that he was asked to write the chapter on that game for Doyle Brunson’s ground-breaking book “Super System.”
“I have lost one of my oldest and dearest friends today,” Brunson said. “He was one of the most unique individuals I have ever known, and poker has lost one of the greats today.”
Other tributes have continued to pour in for the man who Gus Hansen described as “the kind of gambler we should all strive to be.”
Close friend and author Barry Greenstein has recorded a moving audio blog describing his regular partner as “the greatest player in poker … when it comes to respect, Chip was number one.”
Reese’s funeral is thought to be arranged for Friday, although details have not been released to the public.
