Mugging leaves a sour taste at the Aussie Millions

January 23, 2008

aussiemillions.jpgThe week-long Aussie Millions poker tournament culminated in disturbing fashion for young American poker player Jason Potter.

The 22 year old from Oklahoma finished the tournament in 33rd place and picked up winnings amounting to $30,000 which he was understandably delighted with. Unfortunately though, a late night trip to the nearby McDonalds to celebrate his success ended in the American being mugged and a thief making off with all of the prize money.

“I had already been home to my hotel room but decided to go out and get something to eat because I was hungry,” said the former political science student.

“I heard someone running resolutely behind me. As I turned around I just got knocked on the back of the head. I fell down and this guy reached immediately into my hooded pocket.”

Potter has told the police that he believes that the culprit was a poker fan who was watching the tournament and then followed him out of the casino after he’d seen the player pick up a combination of Australian and US $100 bills.

“I thought about trying to fight him but I thought no amount of money is worth it,” he said having survived the ordeal without injury.

Details of the attack overshadowed the news that the tournament itself was won by 21 year old Alexander Kostritsyn from Russia who pocketed $1.6million for his week’s work - the largest prize to be awarded in a live poker tournament held in the southern hemisphere.

Kostritsyn had been playing for less than three years and was the only European at the final table. His biggest previous win was $8,900 which he had used to finance his trip to Australia.

Negreanu can’t repeat last year’s success.

January 22, 2008

Daniel NegreanuDaniel Negreanu found the running at this years World Poker Open much heavier going than he did 12 months ago.

Negreanu, a fan’s favourite, finished in second place last year and was greeted enthusiastically by those who had come to watch him play. Unfortunately for his fans though, he was eliminated with just under an hour left to play on the first day of The Poker Tour’s annual tournament in Tunica, Mississippi.

He started slowly, but began to build up some momentum as the morning continued and seemed to have put any problems behind him when his A-K held up against Q-10 and a pair of fours to allow him to doubled up in a three-way pot. His joy was short-lived though and by the end of the day he had been forced out of the running.

He wasn’t the only big name searching for a bus fair home though as fellow professionals Ted Lawson, Dave ‘The Devilfish’ Ulliot and Gavin Griffin also fell by the wayside.

With the World Poker Open competing with a number of other major poker tournaments around the world, the slightly low turn out of 117 players wasn’t totally unexpected. However, an enlarged field for Day 1B is expected to increase the number of players to around the 300 mark.

January 15, 2008

Lederer claims first spot Down-Under

January 13, 2008

Howard LedererThe Aussie Millions $100,000 no limit hold’em tournament was won by The Professor, Howard Lederer on Saturday evening.

Twenty five players turned up to play in the tournament - an improvement on the turnout from 12 months ago. Players such as Phil Ivey, Chris Ferguson and Mark Teltscher turned up in force to compete for the AUD $1.25 million first prize, but it was Lederer who walked away with the winner’s cheque.

He overcame last year’s champion Erick Lingren who had actually gone into the final table as the chip leader but ultimately went out on the bubble in a disappointing sixth place.

Teltscher finished in second place (AUD $650,000), with Michael Sampoerna and Jeffrey Lisandro finishing in third and fourth spot respectively. Nikolaus Jedlicka took the final cash spot by finishing in fifth position.

The fun isn’t over yet though with the AUD $5,000 Heads-Up championship due to start on Thursday morning.
